FAM plans 4 Nation’s tourney for Scorchers as WAFCON finals preps
Football Association of Malawi (FAM) is revealing plans to organise a Four Nation’s Tournament for the Scorchers as part of preparations for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) finals.
FAM president Fleetwood Haiya has disclosed this at a media briefing in Blantyre where he commented several stakeholders for the team’s historic success.
“We want our girls to prepare well for the tournament hence this step. We want two of the teams from the Four Nation’s Tournament to be those that have qualified for the continental showpiece,” revealed Haiya.
Considering that the four semi-finalists at the finals will qualify for the 2027 Women’s World Cup and that the losing quarter-finalists will engage in playoffs for two spots at an inter-confederation qualifier, the FAM boss has hinted that: “We want the team to reach semifinals so as to seal a place to the World Cup.”
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is yet to confirm the dates for the tournament, but initially FIFA earmarked it to be played between March 17 and April 3.
