Hiwa: We are happy.

The Tertiary Students Sports Association of Malawi -TESSAM is optimistic that the inclusion of football and netball to the National Bank of Malawi (NBM) sponsored Mo626 Varsity Games will contribute to the growth of various sports disciplines in the country.

The K480 million varsity tournament replaces the Mo626 College Basketball Tournament, which has been exclusively featuring basketball only for four seasons.

Speaking ahead of the official launch in Mzuzu on Saturday, TESSAM vice president Geoffrey Biya has thanked the high-street bank for including other sports codes.

“We are expecting that the games will promote sports in the universities further than what we have already been doing. We are also excited because the tournament will give us a platform to prepare for next year’s Confederation of University and College Sports Associations – CUCSA games in Uganda,” hinted Biya.

On her part, National Bank’s marketing and corporate affairs manager, Akossa Hiwa, said: “We are happy to note that when the students are playing the game, they elevate themselves beyond sports. They learn teamwork, leadership, and strategic skills. So, we are happy that we are going to launch the tournament at Mzuzu University this weekend.”

Mo626 Varsity Games will feature 21 institutions of higher learning, with all the sports disciplines featuring men’s and ladies’ teams.
