The National Advocacy Platform (NAP) has described the appointment of Sameer Suleman as the new speaker of Parliament as a defining moment for Malawi’s democracy and a reflection of Parliament’s independence.
The civil society network says the outcome demonstrates the power of the secret ballot and the collective will of legislators to uphold the integrity of the National Assembly.
NAP Chairperson Benedicto Kondowe has commended Suleman’s courage and consistency during his tenure as Chairperson of the Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture and Food Security, noting his willingness to speak truth to power and defend the interests of Malawians.
Kondowe says those qualities should now be exercised through fair and impartial leadership that promotes unity and integrity in the House.
“The Speakership demands balance, humility, and restraint,” Kondowe said, adding that Suleman’s success will be measured by how well he upholds Parliament’s authority as an institution above partisan lines. He urged the new Speaker to foster dialogue, protect the dignity of Parliament, and ensure transparency in legislative processes.
NAP has since called on Members of Parliament to rally behind the new Speaker and focus on serving the nation emphasizing that unity and collaboration across party lines are key to restoring public confidence and strengthening democratic governance.
