Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) presidential running mate, Jane Ansah, has pledged that the party will strengthen the role of traditional leaders in local governance should it return to power.

During her campaign stop at Senior Chief Mwaulambya’s headquarters in Chitipa, Ansah outlined DPP’s commitment to deepening decentralisation, saying chiefs are an essential link between the state and citizens.

She assured that the party’s manifesto seeks to empower local leadership to take a greater part in decision-making at community level.

Her remarks followed Senior Chief Mwaulambya’s appeal for the creation of a council of chiefs to collectively address matters affecting traditional leaders.

The chief, who praised Ansah’s appointment as running mate as “guided by God,” urged her to champion integrity and respect for the rule of law in government.

Ansah, running alongside former president Arthur Peter Mutharika, further promised that a DPP administration would revive unfinished development projects in Chitipa.

She reminded the audience of DPP’s role in the drafting of the 1993 Constitution, describing the party as committed to protecting democratic values.

She commended Senior Chief Mwaulambya for what she termed “God-fearing leadership,” saying Malawians are eager for transformational leadership.
