Mtumbuka hails Paramount Chief Kyungu as political ambassador of peace
UTM presidential running mate, Engineer Dr. Matthews Mtumbuka, has hailed Paramount Chief Kyungu of Karonga, describing him as a true custodian of peace and political tolerance in Malawi.
Speaking after paying a courtesy call at Kyungu’s official residence in Karonga, Dr. Mtumbuka said the chief has always preached unity and tolerance, a role that has significantly contributed to the growth of democracy in the country.
“Paramount Chief Kyungu is not only a traditional leader but also a political ambassador of peace. He has always emphasized the importance of tolerance, and that is something I personally value as we go into this election,” said Mtumbuka.
In his soft tone, Paramount Chief Kyungu wished Dr. Mtumbuka well and blessed him as he conducts whistle-stop rallies in Chitipa and Karonga.
The chief urged politicians to focus on issue-based campaigns and to put national development ahead of personal or party interests.
“As custodian of culture and ambassador of peace, I will see to it that peace prevails during and after the elections. Politicians must avoid insults and instead promote issue-based campaigns that will move our country forward,” Kyungu said.
Dr. Mtumbuka echoed the chief’s call, pledging to uphold peace throughout the campaign period. He further promised that, once elected, UTM would continue promoting issue-based politics, respect traditional leaders, and uplift their welfare.
“I have always said that our campaign will remain focused on real issues affecting Malawians. We will respect chiefs and ensure that their welfare is uplifted, because they play a vital role in nation-building,” he said.
The meeting between Mtumbuka and Kyungu has been described by observers as a strong reminder of the need for peaceful, developmental and issue-driven political engagement ahead of the September polls.
