National Bank of Malawi (NBM) plc has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting maternal and child health initiatives In Kasungu by donating K20 million in support of the Kasungu Mother’s Fun Run (MFR) event.

Speaking during a cheque presentation ceremony at their head office in Blantyre, NBM’s Customs Road Service Centre manager, Ivy Mshali, said the bank recognizes mothers as an important part of its customer base and remains dedicated to giving back to communities through initiatives that promote the well-being of mothers and children.

“As a bank, mothers are also part of our customers. We would like to give back to our society through helping the mothers and the children. Because they give us business, we also have to give back as a thank you for the support they give us,” Mshali said.

She emphasized that the bank’s contributions are aimed not only at appreciating its customers but also at saving lives, particularly in hospitals where shortages of essential resources often put mothers and infants at risk.

“If we had all the resources available in hospitals, I don’t think many mothers and children would be dying. That’s why we are able to part with some of our profits to assist, and we’ll continue doing so for as long as National Bank exists,” she added.

Mshali further noted that this is not the first time NBM has extended such support, highlighting the bank’s ongoing partnership with Nation Publications Limited to provide assistance to health institutions and communities in need.

Receiving the donation, a representative from Nation Publications Limited (NPL) Nation on Sunday editor Emmanuel Luciano, hailed the contribution as timely and impactful.

“We are very grateful to National Bank because this is a tremendous contribution. Twenty million kwacha is a lot of money and we believe it will make a significant difference in promoting safe motherhood and fighting maternal and neonatal deaths,” said the representative.

Luciano added that many hospitals still lack basic amenities, but initiatives such as the Safe Motherhood campaign have helped reduce deaths among expectant mothers and newborns during delivery.

The 2025 Mother’s Fun Run focuses on improving safe motherhood in Kasungu District, where many facilities face shortages of life-saving equipment.

NPL has described the ceremony as a celebration of partnership and community impact, urging the public to join in standing for safer motherhood.
