MACRA urges Malawians to embrace digital literacy for inclusive growth

Suleman: Equipping citizens with digital skills is essential for navigating today’s interconnected world
The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) has underscored the importance of digital literacy in fostering inclusive growth and responsible online engagement in the digital era.
Writing in his weekly MACRA Corner, Director General Daud Suleman said that while the digital age offers vast opportunities for economic growth and connectivity, it also poses challenges such as misinformation and unethical online behavior.
He emphasized that digital literacy—defined as the ability to use digital tools safely, effectively, and productively—is no longer a luxury but a national imperative for Malawi’s development.
“Equipping citizens with digital skills is essential for navigating today’s interconnected world,” Suleman said, noting that Malawi’s mobile phone access now exceeds 50 percent of the population.
He urged citizens to verify online information, use social media responsibly, stay updated on digital laws, and practice ethical online conduct.
Suleman added that mastering digital literacy unlocks opportunities in education, entrepreneurship, and employment, empowering Malawians to participate meaningfully in the digital economy.
