Moyo: We will train stakeholders and community members on clear response steps

Save the Children Malawi, in partnership with the Girls Empowerment Network (GENET) and the Ministry of Education, has introduced the ARISE Project to the Balaka District Executive Committee (DEC).

The initiative is designed to equip school authorities with skills to respond to disasters effectively.

Speaking during the presentation, Save the Children’s Senior Technical Advisor on Education and Child Development, Anderson Moyo, said the project seeks to end the recurring practice of turning schools into evacuation camps during emergencies.

“This is an education emergency program that empowers communities to act quickly and appropriately when disasters strike. We will train stakeholders and community members on clear response steps so that schools remain safe learning spaces, not shelters,” Moyo explained.

Balaka District Director of Education and Sports, Saulos Namani, welcomed the initiative, observing that disasters have repeatedly disrupted learning in the district.

“Currently, over 20 schools in Balaka have been affected by disasters. This program is timely and will help safeguard education,” Namani said.

The ARISE Project, funded by the European Union (EU), will run for 24 months and is being implemented in Balaka and Zomba districts.
