Abdul Chiwalo appointed as FAM general secretary
The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has appointed the former Eastern Region Football Association (ERFA) chairperson, Abdul Chiwalo as its new General Secretary, effective 18th August 2025.
Announced by FAM President Fleetwood Haiya in a late-night press release, the decision was unanimously endorsed by the FAM Executive Committee following his recommendation.
Chiwalo, a distinguished ACCA Chartered Accountant, holds dual Master’s Degrees in Financial Management and Economic Policy, alongside a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting.
“With over 15 years of senior management experience, including his recent role as Management Accountant at the Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA), he brings a wealth of experience from key managerial and decision-making positions he has held,” said Haiya.
He takes over from Alfred Gunda, whose contract has come to an end after eight dedicated years at the helm.
Gunda, a respected figure in Malawi’s football circles, also served on the FAM Executive Committee and as General Secretary for the Northern Region Football Association before assuming the national role.
FAM President Haiya extended heartfelt appreciation to Gunda for his service.
