The government says it is in the process of reassessing the licence fees that radio stations and other broadcasters are required to pay, a step aimed at easing financial pressures in the media sector.

Information Minister Shadric Namalomba revealed the development in Kasungu during the official launch of Linga FM, where he served as guest of honour.

Namalomba explained that the DPP administration has listened to concerns raised by broadcasters over the years about the high cost of licence fees.

He said government, in collaboration with MACRA, is working toward announcing new fee structures soon.

“We do not want to see any radio station being forced off air because it cannot manage its licence fees. Our goal is to create an environment where stations can operate freely,” Namalomba said.

At the same event, Linga FM Managing Director Alex Major assured audiences that the station is committed to impartial and ethical broadcasting.

Media bodies also took the opportunity to encourage the new station to uphold high journalistic standards.

MISA Malawi Chairperson Golden Matonga reminded broadcasters of their duty to the public, stating: “We encourage Linga FM and all media outlets to remain professional and serve the public with integrity.”

Media Council of Malawi Executive Director Moses Kaufa echoed the call, urging the station to stay committed to ethical reporting.

“Our appeal is for Linga FM to uphold professionalism at all times. We also call on the government to seriously consider reducing licence fees to ease the burden on broadcasters,” he said.

Linga FM, which went on air in 2022, broadcasts to audiences across the country and takes its name from Linga Village under Senior Chief Mwase in Kasungu.
