New chief of defense

The newly appointed heads of security institutions are being challenged to distinguish themselves as professionals and restore public trust.

This follows various public appointments alongside a partial cabinet made by President Peter Mutharika, effective last night.

George Jafu is the chief of defence for the Malawi Defence Force, while Richard Luhanga is the new inspector general of police.

Luhanga’s deputies are Stain Chaima, who is responsible for operations, and Noel Kaira responsible for administration.

A security expert from Mzuzu University, Aubrey Kabisala, stressed the need to restore security, especially public safety.

“These people were due for promotions if you look at the chain of command from the two institutions; however, it is my wish that they will remain professional and ensure that the lost glory is restored. It was sad that people lost trust in the profession, especially the Malawi police service.”

Master Dicks Mfune, a governance expert from the Malawi School of Government, also weighs in his view.

“The MDF has been an institution of integrity, and the person at the helm now has what it takes to run the institution; likewise, the Malawi Police Service, all we demand is for them to be professional.”

Mfune also commended Mutharika for appointing such people from other regions and not necessarily the Lhomwe belt where he comes from.
