The Anglican Council in Malawi has urged the president-elect to embrace all Malawians regardless of political affiliation, creed, ethnicity, or region.

In a congratulatory message to President-elect Peter Mutharika and Vice President-elect Jane Ansah, the Council emphasized the need to focus on peace and reconciliation.

The Council further called on the incoming government to remain steadfast in fulfilling the campaign promises made to the people.

According to Right Reverend William Mchombo, Chairperson of the Anglican Council in Malawi and Bishop of the Diocese of Upper Shire, “Mutharika and his party should refrain from pursuing vengeance or retribution, but rather ensure that their leadership is marked by integrity, transparency, and a genuine commitment to the welfare of the citizenry.”

The Council also commended outgoing President Lazarus Chakwera for conceding defeat and prioritizing the nation’s interests.

“We commend you for accepting the results of the elections and for promising a peaceful and orderly transition of power,” the statement read.

In a related development, Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Chairperson Annabel Mtalimanja was praised for demonstrating impartiality, professionalism, and nonpartisanship during the elections.

“Throughout the electoral process, you remained resilient despite the pressure you were subjected to, thereby upholding the democratic will of the people,” noted Mchombo.
