The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has announced further progress in the tallying of presidential election results, confirming that physical records from all 36 councils have now arrived at the National Tally Centre in Lilongwe.
In its update delivered last evening, MEC reported that results have been determined from 24 councils, including districts such as Machinga, Nkhotakota, Lilongwe City, Dowa, Chikwawa, Nsanje, Zomba, Blantyre City, M’mbelwa in Mzimba, Balaka, and Thyolo.
As of last night, Peter Mutharika of the Democratic Progressive Party is leading with 2,022,879 votes.
He is followed by Lazarus Chakwera of the Malawi Congress Party with 732,575 votes, while Dalitso Kabambe of the UTM is taking the third position.
MEC Chairperson, Annabelle Mtalimanja, emphasized that the Commission remains committed to delivering results within the legally required eight-day timeframe, but cautioned against premature celebrations, street demonstrations, and the spread of fake news.
The Commission stressed that all complaints will be resolved through proper legal and administrative channels, warning that no amount of public disorder will alter the figures or the law.
With 24 out of 36 councils determined, the race now enters a decisive phase as Malawians await the final declaration of results before the deadline.
