CISONECC calls for urgent emission cuts to protect children’s future

The Civil Society Network on Climate Change (CISONECC) has called for urgent action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, warning that failure to act now will endanger the future of children born today.
CISONECC National Coordinator Julius Ng’oma made the remarks while responding to a new Save the Children report, which reveals that children born from 2020 onwards are likely to experience far more climate-related disasters than previous generations.
The report highlights the disproportionate burden climate change places on children, stressing that without urgent global action, younger generations will face increased risks of floods, droughts, heat waves, and other climate-related crises.
“If we are to safeguard the life and future of these children, then we must start reducing and eliminating greenhouse gas emissions immediately,” said Ng’oma.
“The emissions we release today will determine the severity of climate change impacts 20, 30, or 50 years from now.”
Ng’oma noted that climate change is already happening due to gases that have built up in the atmosphere over time.
He warned that if emissions are not curbed within the next five years, future generations will face even harsher realities.
“We need to stop emitting now so that we can reduce the likelihood of extreme impacts in the future. That’s the most important step we can take today,” he added.
