As Malawi prepares for its upcoming elections, the Union of Concerned Citizens has called for peace, unity, and the dissemination of truthful information.

At a press briefing currently underway in Blantyre, the group emphasized the need for all stakeholders to protect democracy by avoiding divisive rhetoric and false claims.

The group, led by Shaibu Ajassie, clarified that the voting and vote-counting processes will be conducted manually, dismissing rumours about the use of electronic voting machines, particularly those involving Smartmatic.

“Smartmatic is not a voting machine. It is simply the name of a company—not a tool being used to rig or manipulate the elections,” their statement read.

The Union called on all political parties, especially opposition parties, to stop spreading unfounded allegations that could mislead voters, suppress participation, and cause unnecessary tension.

Raising concerns about reports of ex-soldiers being mobilized to disrupt the electoral process, the Union strongly condemned the alleged tactic and called on authorities to act swiftly to maintain law and order.

The group encouraged all eligible voters to cast their ballots and reject intimidation, violence, and disinformation.

“Your vote is your power. Your voice counts,” the statement concluded.
