Mzuzu Lions Club has committed to venture into bigger projects that serve and uplift lives of communities as part of its continued dedication to community service and development initiatives.

The Club’s President Cedric Sapuwa made the commitment when National Bank of Malawi (NBM) Plc donated MK3 million to Mzuzu Lions Club to support activities commemorating the club’s 30 years of dedicated community service, slated for Friday next week.

Sapuwa said as the club is getting older, their vision will now shift to bigger projects for bigger impact as they continue to serve the community and celebrate the successes they have achieved in the last 30 years.

“We expect to do more. What we have seen is that as Mzuzu Lions Club is getting mature and visionary, our projects will be serious. We have just finished a US$550,000 project and we are now looking for bigger projects that we want to realize. So, expect more from us,” Sapuwa said.

Sapuwa highlighted some of the projects, the club, which is one of the oldest Lions Club in Malawi has achieved since its establishment in 1995.

“Mzuzu Lions Club has done quite a lot of projects both visible and invisible ones,” he said.

“Invisible ones are so huge including sending students to school, some of them are now lawyers.”

“The ones you could see as still standing include Mzuzu Central Guardian Shelter, the hospital’s Eye Clinic and equipment therein, a girls hostel at Bandawe Girls School of Hard Hearing, a full primary school at hard-to-reach Malokotera area,” Sapuwa said.

He added; “Every year, we also do bed race. In this, what we do is that we go to hospitals like Mapale, Mzimba, and Mzuzu Central. We collect broken beds, repair them, use them in our race, and when giving them back, we return them with brand news mattresses.”

Sapuwa further said they have also bought an ambulance worth MK90 million, which is used to go, test for free, and do eye procedures in so many districts across the country.

On the donation, Sapuwa expressed gratitude to NBM, describing it as a true friend.

“What a friend National Bank is, it is something that has joyed us. When we reach them, they have always been on our side and indeed it is a true friend, it is the bank of the nation indeed,” he said.

On his part, NBM Mzuzu Service Centre Manager Samson Mzungu, said the bank’s donation is rooted in its belief in making a meaningful difference in the community.

“Mzuzu Lions Club approached us. After evaluating, we saw the alignment between what we offer in terms of impact in our corporate social investments. Mzuzu Lions Club or Lions Club as a whole, their service to humanity is so conspicuous. The impact that they give in terms of like in the health sector as well as uplifting communities is aligned with the bank’s aims in terms of corporate social investment,” Mzungu said.

He then stressed the need for civic education for sustainability of projects they support, as the one the Mzuzu Lions Club is planning to implement using funds from the donation.

“Mzuzu Lions Club is supporting with this donation the cleaning of the environment and the bank believes that the society should aim at living in a clean and health environment, so the most important thing is awareness of communities for sustainability as it requires everyone taking part,” Mzungu said.
