People’s Party (PP) president, Joyce Banda, has described the recent acts of political violence in Malawi as a “demonic spirit” that requires divine intervention.

Banda made the remarks during a rally held today at Karonga Freedom Park.

In an interview with Capital FM, Banda accused some political leaders of using intimidation and violence to force Malawians to support them, saying such tactics go against the will of the people.

“I want us as a nation to reflect. If this is a curse, I call upon the clergy to pray for us. There is a demonic spirit roaming this country, where people are hacking, killing, and shooting each other. It doesn’t make sense. As leaders, we must do soul-searching and reflect on what we are doing to our children.

In the process of making false promises, we are losing an entire generation by giving them pangas and turning them into thugs,” Banda said.

She further stressed that her party will not condone such acts of violence, calling on political leaders to engage in dialogue. Banda also emphasized that leaders must accept the people’s choice.

She says she is prepared to accept the results of the September 16 elections, even if it means defeat.

Her remarks come in the wake of violent attacks in Lilongwe, where demonstrators were assaulted by unidentified men armed with machetes.
