The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has arrested Yeremiah Chihana, Member of Parliament for Mzimba North Constituency, on allegations of abuse of office and failure to declare interest.

In a statement released today, the ACB said its investigations uncovered that Chihana requested Mzimba District Council to make payments of K14 million and K15 million to Northworks Company Limited for the grading of several roads in his constituency, fully aware that the company would not carry out the rehabilitation works.

The roads involved in the transaction include the KIA-Luhomero-Kasasile road, Enukweni-Kavula-Malokotera road, and the Bwengu-Katope road.

The ACB further established that Chihana failed to declare his contractual relationship with Northworks Company Limited, which had been awarded the road contracts. This omission constitutes a conflict of interest, according to the Bureau.

Chihana is expected to face two counts of abuse of office and one count of failure to declare interest, contrary to Section 25D (2) (a) of the Corrupt Practices Act.
