The Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) is neither confirming nor denying reports that another 1 million liters of oil for generators has been stolen.
During his rallies in Zomba and Mulanje over the weekend, United Transformation Movement (UTM) leader who is also the country’s Vice President Saulos Chilima alleged about the missing of the fuel.
“We cannot be saying today three million liters of fuel have been stolen and then the next day you steal another one million liters to make it four million liters.”
“That is taking Malawians for granted so we want to let you know that Malawians are wise people and you will see their anger in May 2019,” Chilima said.
The Vice President also revealed during the grouping’s launch at Njamba Freedom Park that three million liters of oil was stolen at ESCOM.
He was later vindicated after ESCOM confirmed that indeed the said amount of fuel was stolen and people were arrested in connection to the crime.
Speaking to Capital FM, however, Senior Public Relations Manager of ESCOM Innocent Chitosi reserved his comment saying it can jeopardize the ongoing investigations.
Chitosi said there are investigations that are currently underway for the first revealed three million liters therefore commenting on the recent remarks from Chilima has the ability to affect these investigations.
“You may recall that they are investigations going on so because of that we would rather not be seen to prejudice the investigations or its outcomes so because of that, we can not give any detail,” Chitosi said.
On measures put in place to make sure that the system is secured, Chitosi is of the view that revealing the measures can give people a chance to beat the security system.
Chilima has however threatened that he has all relevant documents and he will investigate this on his own.
