Malawian film Road to Sunrise has won the 2018 Africa Magic Viewers Choice Award (AMVCA) for Best Southern Africa Movie.
The movie which was directed and produced by award winning filmmaker Shemu Joya, the film becomes the second local movie to get the prestigious award.
After receiving the award over the weekend in Lagos, Nigeria, Joya took to social media to thank the team that was behind the production of the film, he also expressed satisfaction at the feedback received since its release in November 2017.
The film centers on the lives of two prostitutes who are exploited by men and ridiculed by the world. The two, find hope in each other as they search for the road to redemption.
The 145 minute long motion picture stars Mirriam Phiri, Hope Chisanu, Chantelle Phiri, Yankho Seunda and many more local actors.
Other films in the category included Nyasaland by Malawi’s Joyce Mhango Chavula, South Africa’s Descent by Awal Abdulfatai, Salute! by Phillipe Talavera of Namibia and Zambia’s Jomako Black Democracy by Abraham Kabwe.
The 6th annual AMVCAs had more than 120 nominations for 27 categories.
Malawi’s first award in the Best Southern Africa Movie category was a Joyce Mhango Chavula film titled Lilongwe in the year 2016.
