The Mulanje First Grade Magistrate Court has sentenced a male nurse to 5 years imprisonment for raping an expectant woman.
Mulanje Police Public Relations Officer, Gresham Ngwira has revealed the development in an interview with Capital FM.
Ngwira disclosed that the 28 year old man, Arthur Moses Chiulika was arrested in February this year for raping the 18 year old expectant mother at Chinyama Health Centre where he was working.
According to Ngwira on the day of the ordeal, the victim went for antenatal clinic at Chinyama Health Centre, where Chiulika is reported to have harassed the woman.
The issue was reported to the police leading to the arrest of Chiulika.
He was charged with rape, contrary to Section 133 of the Penal Code.
In court, the suspect pleaded not guilty, and the state paraded four witnesses to argue the case.
Upon conviction on Monday, Magistrate Smart Maluwasa passed the 5 year sentence.
The Mulanje Police Publicist was quick to mention that rape of this nature is an isolated case, as such incidents are not rampant in the district.
“This is the first of its kind in a number of years now, especially involving a nurse and a patient.” He emphasized.
The police are however worried that the violation of the expectant woman would be detrimental to promoting access to healthcare for pregnant women.
“Cases of this kind take out the trust that patients have in duty bearers.” Ngwira said.
Meanwhile the law enforcers have warn that police will be on anyone’s neck who breaks the law.
