The police in Thyolo district are keeping in custody a herbalist suspected to have defiled a 16 year-old-girl.
The suspect, Sainet Kopolande, 68, who plies his trade around the major trading area in the district is reported to have defiled the girl when her stepfather sought medicine to terminate her pregnancy this week.
Public Relations Officer for Thyolo Police Amos Tione says, “When the stepfather, Billy Size met the herbalist he was assured they will be assisted accordingly.”
“However, sometime later, Kopolande told Size to go out so he could be alone with the girl. This is the time when he found the chance to rape the girl.”
Tione further adds, “After the girl come out of the house, she narrated the ordeal to her father, who reported the matter to police.”
The girl was then referred to Thyolo Hospital, where medical report indicate that she was indeed defiled.
Kopolande is expected to appear before court soon to answer the charge of rape contrary to section 133 of the Penal Code.
It is still unclear on whether Size will also be charged for his intention to get his stepdaughter an illegal abortion as the act punishable by law in Malawi.
According to statistics by the police, defilement cases have increased by 7 percent this year.
