Football fan arrested after injuring child while celebrating Nomads’ defeat
Police in Lilongwe have arrested a 29-year-old football enthusiast for acts intended to cause grievous harm after he accidentally injured a five-year-old boy during exuberant celebrations over Wanderers FC’s loss to Mzuzu City Hammers.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, at around 17:00 hours at Shire Bus Depot.
The suspect, identified as Oscar Wiga, allegedly grabbed the child from his mother and threw him into the air repeatedly in excitement after learning of Mighty Wanderers FC’s defeat.
According to Lilongwe police spoken, Wiga—overwhelmed by the thrill of the Nomads’ loss—seized the boy without the mother’s consent and began tossing him up while cheering.
However, during the third throw, his grip slipped, causing the child to crash to the ground with force.
The fall left bystanders shocked and alarmed.
The boy was immediately taken to Bwaila District Hospital, where he received treatment for injuries sustained in the incident.
Police say the child’s mother, who had already purchased a ticket to travel to Blantyre, was unable to proceed with her journey due to the distress caused by the ordeal.
Authorities further confirmed that Wiga, who has no relation to the child or his family, has been charged with Acts Intended to Cause Grievous Harm.
He hails from Koloko Village, Traditional Authority Mlumbe in Zomba District.
