21 girls detained over Michiru View Private School arson

Police in Blantyre have detained 21 female students from Michiru View Private School following a fire that damaged several school buildings, including a hostel, the headteacher’s office and school stores.

According to Deputy Public Relations Officer for Blantyre Police, Doris Mwitha, the incident occurred after the students allegedly reacted angrily to a revised school closing date, which had been moved from 19 December to 21 December 2025.

The learners are suspected to have set the fires deliberately, destroying school books, certificates and other property.

Mwitha said investigations are ongoing, but confirmed that the students will face arson-related charges once the police conclude their inquiries.

“Any student found responsible will face the consequences,” she warned.
