President Arthur Peter Mutharika has called on newly commissioned Malawi Defence Force (MDF) officer cadets to prioritise discipline, integrity and professionalism as they join the country’s security system.

Mutharika made the remarks at the Malawi Armed Forces College (MAFCO) in Salima on Friday when he presided over the commissioning of 122 officer cadets.

He said their decision to undergo 18 months of rigorous training shows commitment to national duty and contributes to Malawi’s security system.

“The strength of the military depends on officers who respect their oath and understand evolving threats facing Malawi and the region such as cross-border terrorism, human trafficking and regional instability; challenges which are becoming more complex,” he said.

He urged the new officers to keep upgrading their skills through advanced training so they are prepared for emerging global challenges.

“The public places trust in the uniform, and officers must protect that trust through accountability and humility,” Mutharika said.

He stressed the importance of maintaining a non-partisan military, saying officers should not involve themselves in politics or activities that compromise the values of the MDF.

“Malawi’s continued participation in peacekeeping missions reflects professionalism of its soldiers and strengthens the country’s reputation. I encourage the officers to serve as role models to the youth and inspire future generations to pursue service,” he said.

Mutharika said government remains committed to improving the welfare of service men and women because they make sacrifices that deserve full support from both government and citizens.

Chief of Defence Force, General George Alexander Jaffu, reminded the officers that discipline remains the backbone of the military.

“The MDF does not hesitate to dismiss officers who breach professional conduct. Please lead with respect, uphold security for all citizens and demonstrate character during difficult moments,” he said.

He said regional collaboration remains strong, which is reflected in the participation of cadets from neighbouring countries.

The commissioned officers include 96 men, 26 women; and 10 out of the 122 are from allied countries.
