Six suspects in court over Namiwa attack and panga hacking of civil servants
Namiwa being attacked in Lilongwe
Six people have appeared before the Principal Resident Magistrate’s Court in Lilongwe in connection with the violent attack on activist Sylvester Namiwa and the hacking of civil servants by a group of panga-wielding assailants.
According to a statement from the Malawi Police Service (MPS), the suspects face multiple charges, including acts intended to cause grievous harm, malicious damage, theft, and robbery.
The police identified the suspects as Alfred Dalio Kadula, 43, of Batulen Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Chiseka in Lilongwe; Joseph Tilile Gidien, 50, of Sadya Village, T/A Mbwatalika in Lilongwe; James Banda, 42, of Yoyola Village, T/A Kaperi in Blantyre; Lester Hanleck Aaron Kanjunga, 38, of Zidana Village, T/A Kwatine in Ntcheu; Haward Hamuzza, 27, of Dothi Village, T/A Mbwatalika in Lilongwe; and Mabvuto Njuchi, 27, of Ngozi Village, T/A Neno in Neno District.
The suspects are alleged to have participated in the Namiwa incident and the hacking of civil servants, acts which left several victims seriously injured.
Some of the accused are also linked to the theft of speakers and malicious damage during the same incident.
Police say the six will continue appearing before the court in the coming days as hearings progress.
In the statement, MPS Deputy Public Relations Officer Superintendent Alfred Chimthere reaffirmed the police’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that all criminal acts are thoroughly investigated and prosecuted.
“The Malawi Police Service appeals to the public to remain calm as due process takes its course,” Chimthere added.
