As Lilongwe joins the rest of the world in commemorating cancer awareness month, Malawians are being urged to take a leading role in the fight against the disease.

The call comes after Vivo Energy Malawi, in partnership with the Rotary Club of Blantyre, launched an initiative to create awareness about breast cancer and screen women.

Vivo Energy Malawi managing director Joseph Kering said: “We are not here just to do business, we want to be part of the community in raising awareness and contributing towards early detection of breast cancer. We are calling for everybody to take a leading role in the fight against this to have as many success stories as possible.”

On her part, Rotary Club of Blantyre president, Patricia Khomani, said their partnership with Vivo Energy is to ensure that the society is free of breast cancer.

“We will continue with the awareness and screening even after October. When we identify that among those screened who need treatment, we will be referring them to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital or other private facilities that are handling breast cancer,” Khomani said.

Meanwhile, the director of occupational health services in the Ministry of Health Yotam Moyo, describes breast cancer as amongst top five cancers killing women in the country, hence the need for such measures.

“We commend what Vivo Energy Malawi and the Rotary Club of Blantyre have done to help in the fight against these diseases. As the government, through our ministry, we also have several interventions which we have put in place to address it,” highlighted Moyo.

Through the initiative dubbed Fuel Her Fight, Vivo Energy has branded pink, one pump from nine Engen Stations across the country, of which K5 from every litre will be donated to the cancer fight.
