An experienced organisation in governance and election, Institute for Policy Interaction (IPI) took advantage of Saturday night’s Blantyre Summer Party to encourage people to participate in the September 16 elections.

The Five79 organised gig in the commercial city which was headlined by South African DJ, singer and record producer, Master KG attracted a lot of young voters.

IPI executive director Nandini Patel highlighted that it was a good opportunity to engage the electorate in a different way.

“This is an opportunity to reach out to a large youth audience and inspire them to exercise their right to vote and also provide information on the new electoral laws and procedures.

We have been conducting voter and civic education for the 2025 elections since late 2023.

“We decided to utilise the space of Blantyre Summer Party generously provided by our friend and partner in the promotion of democratic governance that is Five79,” said Patel.

One of the participants, Phineas Alexander Gamula lauded the idea of engaging them in such entertainment places saying it gives a sense of encouragement.

He said: “I am one of the people who have not been interested to vote despite having already registered. The coming in of IPI has made me think otherwise and I hope to vote on the polling day.”

During the Go To Vote engagement, the organisation held an electoral related quiz where people won t-shirts and golf shirts.
IPI’s activity is part of the ongoing Malawi Electoral Support Project (MESP) with the funding from United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
