Usi: Criticizes givernment

The Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has threatened to investigate Vice President Michael Usi if he continues making remarks that criticize the government.

The party’s spokesperson, Jessie Kabwila, made the remarks during a press briefing in Lilongwe.

Recently, Usi has been criticizing some government officials for failing to perform their duties with integrity and diligence.

However, Kabwila said: “Usi, you should simply be grateful that you were chosen to be Vice President under President Chakwera. We can investigate you right now because the number of vehicles for your party has increased, yet this does not match your salary.”

Reacting to the development, MUBAS’s good governance and political analyst, Andrew Kaponya, said Kabwila and her party, Malawi Congress, have every right to say this and to proceed with an investigation if it is in the interest of Malawians.

“However, one wonders whether this condition — that he will be investigated if he continues to speak against MCP — is genuine or merely a way to gag the Vice President,” said Kabwila.

He added that in the same vein, questions should be raised as to why Dr. Usi is raising these concerns now, given that he is part of the same government.

“If he is genuine about the allegations he is making, he should openly speak to his principal and offer solutions. If he is not heard, then he should resign as Vice President before 16th September. This is the only way Malawians will take him seriously,” he justified.
