Habitat for Humanity Malawi has launched Timange Ecobuild, a social enterprise producing eco-friendly interlocking bricks made from clay soil, water, and cement.

This innovative product aims to replace traditional red bricks, which harm the environment during production.

Speaking at the launch of the initiative in Blantyre Machinjiri’s Township on Monday, Timange Ecobuild interim general manager Dumisani Malija said: “We have been concerned with environmental concerns associated with red bricks and we believe that this initiative has the potential to drive positive change in Malawi’s construction industry while promoting sustainable development.”

On his part, the project’s donor representative from the United Kingdom, Chris Endosor, hinted on continued support so as to improve the socioeconomic lives of Malawians.

“I am very happy that we have reached this far. This is a dream come true. So far, we have pumped in over £300,000 for the project. We hope the project will be sustainable and will help to improve the lives of many people because the facility has a production and resource training centre, which will help to promote skills development and enhance capacity for sustainable construction practices,” highlighted Endosor.

Meanwhile, the director of town planning and estates development at Blantyre City Council, Costly Chanza, has commended the non-profit making organisation’s step in preserving the environment.

Chanza said: “We are happy that Habitat for Humanity Malawi’s vision is aligning with us in making sure that the city has better infrastructure while at the same time protecting the environment. This has got the potential to promote sustainable city development and reduce deforestation.”

At least 45 modern homes have so far been constructed for families affected by Cyclone Freddy in Mulanje using the bricks.
