Government vows to clean up real estate sector
Minister of Lands Deus Gumba has reaffirmed government’s commitment to restoring order in Malawi’s real estate sector, citing the growing number of unregulated and unscrupulous estate agents as a serious concern.
Speaking on Friday in Salima during the official orientation of the newly established Estate Management Council, Gumba said the real estate industry has for too long operated without oversight, resulting in widespread malpractice.
“Many Malawians have been defrauded by briefcase estate agents who disappear after collecting payments, leaving victims with no recourse,” Gumba said.
He also decried unethical practices such as charging clients fees just to view properties, or showing houses and plots without authorization from the rightful owners.
“The Council will bring much-needed accountability, professionalism, and regulation to this sector. Only registered and licensed agents will be permitted to operate,” Gumba stressed.
Chairperson of the council Don Whayo echoed the Minister’s sentiments, pledging to protect the public from unlicensed agents.
“For years, Malawians have been taken advantage of with no formal body to turn to. That ends now. We will rigorously vet all applications and ensure only qualified practitioners are licensed” said Whayo.
The Estate Management Council was established under the Estate Management Act of 2024 and formally announced in May this year. It is the first institution mandated to regulate and professionalize real estate services in Malawi.
