RA awaits World Bank approval for civil works on Makanjira Road
The Roads Authority (RA) is awaiting a nod from the World Bank to proceed with contractor procurement for the Chingo–Makanjira Road project.
In a statement, RA Chief Executive Officer Ammiel Champiti said the bidding process for the construction works has been finalized. The total estimated cost of the project is pegged at K77 billion.
Champiti explained that the 95.65-kilometre road connects communities to Mangochi, running along the southeastern shoreline of Lake Malawi and linking Chingo Trading Centre to Makanjira Trading Centre.
“The Authority has secured $28 million from the World Bank, and $49.6 million from the Saudi Fund for Development, the OPEC Fund, and the Kuwait Fund,” said Champiti.
The statement further indicates that the African Development Bank provided financing under the Post-Cyclone Idai and Kenneth Emergency Recovery and Resilience Project, which funded Phase 1 of the corridor.
Meanwhile, the Saudi Fund for Development has issued a No Objection for the procurement of a design review and construction supervision consultant for the main works along the Chingo–Makanjira Road.
So far, Phase One, which involved the construction of Litisa Bridge, has been completed.
On the other hand, the Authority has planned remedial access works along the road under Phase Two, including culvert installation and preparatory earthworks.
