Planting a tree - Chikuta
At least 200 trees have been planted at Kalibu Academy in Blantyre courtesy of Reigning Miss UMP Maisha Chikuta under the Youth Voices, Earth Choices campaign.
The campaign which has been done in conjunction with the academy’s Wildlife and Culture Club, aims to restore the environment and address issues of climate change.
“We realized that we cannot move forward if we do not take care of our environment. We are using the youth because we want the initiative to be sustainable and we are very hopeful that this will go a long way as we continue with all possible measures to reduce climate change,” said the beauty pageant.
Reacting to the initiative, Kalibu Academy’s head of agriculture department and tree planting coordinator Kupatsa Kaphaizi lauded the initiative by UMP adding that it is complementing their initiative which started in 2017.
She said: “Miss UMP has spiced up what we already do here at school because we have been doing this for eight years. We have our nursery where we have seedlings and we even donate other schools in the society. Wteach our students to take care of the environment.”
To Joy Chaika, a student at the institution, the initiative is very exciting and important to her and all the students.
“We have enjoyed planting trees and I am glad that our school has taken this step. We promise to take good care of the trees,” Chaika said.
During the event, the students enjoyed a surprise performance by musician Jetu.
