Over 19,000 households in Dedza District are expected to move out of poverty, following the second disbursement of the Social Cash Transfer Programme, which is targeting all eight Traditional Authorities in the district.
Principal Social Welfare Officer for Dedza District Council, Mtende Lungu, disclosed that the disbursement exercise, which has already commenced in some areas, covers the months of April to June 2025.
He noted that the funds aim to cushion households severely affected by hunger.
Lungu encouraged beneficiaries to utilize the funds responsibly to achieve the intended impact.
“The Social Cash Transfer Programme aims to reduce poverty and malnutrition, as well as to improve school enrollment. I urge beneficiaries to use the funds for their intended purposes,” said Lungu.
He further revealed that a total of K903,878,500 has been allocated for the exercise, with funds currently being distributed manually. However, plans are underway to transition to electronic payments.
“We have received over K900 million to be distributed over the three months of April, May, and June. While the current mode of payment is manual, we are working towards adopting an electronic payment system very soon,” Lungu added.
Addressing concerns raised by some beneficiaries regarding the insufficiency of the funds amid the rising cost of living, Lungu assured the public that discussions are ongoing to consider a possible increase.
“We are aware of these concerns. The government and its development partners are in talks to adjust the funding upwards. However, it is still important that beneficiaries make the most of the funds they receive,” he said.
One of the beneficiaries, Estere Damiano from the area of Traditional Authority Tambala, praised the initiative, saying it will help support her two children who are in secondary school.
“This money will go a long way in assisting with school expenses for my children. I am very grateful for the support,” she said.
