DPP warns members against independent candidacy

Mukhitho: This provision is in place to maintain the unity, integrity, and collective strength of our Party,
The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has warned its members that anyone who chooses to stand as an independent candidate in the forthcoming general elections will automatically cease to be a party member.
This follows reports that some shadow members of parliament from the Southern and Eastern Regions, who either lost or boycotted the party’s primary elections, have declared intentions to run independently.
In a statement released yesterday and signed by DPP Secretary General Peter Mukhito, the party cited Article 24 (2)(u) of its constitution, disqualifying any member who contests elections outside the party’s official endorsement.
“This provision is in place to maintain the unity, integrity, and collective strength of our Party,” Mukhito said, adding that the DPP values loyalty and adherence to party regulations.
Mukhito emphasized that any member who declares an independent candidacy will have their membership in the party revoked immediately.
The party has urged all members to carefully consider their decisions and remain committed to its principles and objectives in pursuit of a “prosperous and democratic nation.”
