Woman arrested for concealing birth in Phalombe

Police in Phalombe are keeping in custody a 28-year-old woman, Getrude Nyambo, for allegedly concealing the birth of her newborn baby, whose lifeless body was discovered on Friday morning.

According to Phalombe Police Station Public Relations Officer, Sergeant Jimmy Kapanja, the incident occurred on May 2, 2025, around 08:00 a.m., when pupils on their way to Chilayeni Primary School noticed the body of a baby boy floating in stagnant water under a bridge.

“The pupils alerted a nearby woman, who reported the matter to the police. Officers rushed to the scene with medical personnel who confirmed that the baby was male, about a day old, and had died due to suffocation,” said Sergeant Kapanja.

Following investigations, police apprehended Nyambo, who hails from Nyambalo Village under Traditional Authority Mkhumba. During interrogation, she confessed to having given birth and subsequently dumping the baby after her boyfriend allegedly denied responsibility for the pregnancy.

A medical examination confirmed that Nyambo had recently delivered a full-term baby.

She remains in custody and is expected to appear in court soon, pending completion of necessary documentation.

Police have since condemned the act and urged the public to seek support in times of crisis rather than resort to criminal actions.
