Easter road accidents claim 9 lives

Nine people lost their lives in road accidents during the 2025 Easter holiday, an increase from the six fatalities recorded during the same period last year, the Malawi Police Service (MPS) has confirmed.

This rise in deaths comes despite a slight reduction in accidents, 25 this year compared to 30 in 2024.

Police data also shows a significant drop in the number of injuries, from 40 last year to 26 this Easter.

Most of the accidents occurred during nighttime hours, with authorities linking them to common traffic violations.

These included exceeding vehicle carrying capacity (2,042 cases), speeding (753 cases), and drink-driving (285 cases).

National Police Deputy Public Relations Officer, Harry Namwaza, has since urged road users to follow Road Traffic Rules and Regulations, warning that negligence continues to cost lives on Malawian roads.
