SRCL commits to promoting female chess players

WCM TUPOKIWE MSUKWA

The Southern Region Chess League (SRCL) is committed to developing competitive female chess players capable of representing Malawi in international tournaments.

SRCL publicist Dumisani Kadzombe emphasized this goal following the conclusion of the SRCL CAS Contractors Chess Championship, held on April 19-20, 2025.

“The regional chess league governing body organized the tournament to foster talent and improve the standard of chess in the region.

And we have seen that through the competitiveness between the players, especially the younger talent that played on the day,” Kadzombe said

Woman Candidate Master (WCM) Tupokiwe Msukwa emerged victorious in a tightly contested match after seven rounds of intense play, securing first place with a flawless score of 7 points.

Representing Malawi with a rating of 1669, Msukwa demonstrated dominance throughout the event, remaining undefeated and outperforming a competitive field.

Her performance placed her ahead of fellow WCM Rachel Jailoss, who finished in second place with 5.5 points and a rating of 1532.

Temwa Kumwenda claimed third place with 5 points, leveraging a strong tie-break score of 28 — the highest among the top three.

Despite having fewer points, Kumwenda outpaced other competitors through strategic play and consistency.

Charity Tadeyo and Tamara Kaliwo rounded out the top five with 4.5 and 4 points, respectively.

Kaliwo, who had a rating of 1515, posted the highest overall tie-break score of 28.5 but fell short in total points.
