Mozambican national arrested for alleged fuel smuggling

Fuel being transported

Police in Mulanje have arrested a Mozambican businessperson, Fadweck Thomas, on suspicion of attempting to smuggle 600 liters of diesel into Mozambique without proper documentation.

According to Edward Kabango, spokesperson for the Southern Eastern Police Region, the police received a tip-off on Sunday that Thomas was transporting the fuel in a Toyota Land Cruiser with registration number MMS 93-48.

He was reportedly heading towards the Muloza border post when police intercepted the vehicle.

“Upon searching, we found the vehicle in question, and the suspect failed to produce valid documents authorizing the transportation of the fuel,” Kabango said.

“We arrested him on the spot, and he now faces two charges. He is expected to appear in court soon.”

Kabango further urged fuel station operators in the district to refrain from selling large quantities of fuel in drums, warning that it is illegal and could contribute to smuggling activities.

Fadweck Thomas hails from Villa Milanje in Mozambique’s Zambezia Province.
