CYLA grooms DPP youth in governance ahead of September 16

The Centre for Young Leaders in Africa (CYLA) under Program for Young Politicians in Africa (PYPA) is emphasizing the urgent need for capacity building for youth in various political parties.

The program is currently engaging major political parties on meaningful youth participation in politics.

Specifically, CYLA is training young people from the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), Alliance for Democracy (AFORD), UTM, Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), and the United Democratic Front (UDF).

CYLA executive director Clement Kangwa told the Capital FM website that there is great demand for specific capacity-building programs targeting young politicians in political parties ahead of the September 16 general elections.

“We need to see inclusivity in parties between prominent party leaders and the youth, particularly in governance,” Kangwa said.

He further appealed to the Political party leadership to initiate capacity-building programs regularly to ensure that they actively participate in governance issues.

A youth representative from the Central region, Halima Bangara said the training has increased her knowledge in governance and has since pledged to put her knowledge to use.

Bangara said: “Such capacity building programs are important for us as young women, specifically, because we now are able to make informed decisions and strategically bold steps in our engagements between our side and the party’s executive leadership.”

Meanwhile, after previous sessions with the Malawi congress party youth leadership, Director of Youth Baba Steve Malondera, said such gatherings are key to fostering peace through knowledge on how to deal with rising inter-party conflicts ahead of elections.

AFORD, UTM and Peoples Party(PP) leaderships concurred with the sentiment by the MCP member, underscoring the need for all political parties to live in harmony and incorporate the youth in different positions.
