Vendors in Zomba have taken to the streets to protest against the rising cost of commodities they sell, citing unbearable economic hardships.
The demonstrations, which have drawn large crowds despite the rainy weather, began at Zomba Community Ground and are heading towards the district commissioner’s office.
Zomba Central Parliamentarian Bester Awali has joined the protesters in a show of solidarity.
The demonstrators, chanting and carrying placards, are passing through key locations such as Namiwawa, Zomba Zero, and the M1 road.
Security forces are present to monitor the situation and maintain order.
Meanwhile, businesses in Zomba town have closed, with shop owners fearing possible looting or disruptions.
Protesters are demanding urgent government intervention to stabilize prices and ease the financial burden on small traders.
The rising cost of goods has significantly impacted their businesses, making it difficult for them to sustain their livelihoods.
