CSEIF warns against undermining MEC, calls for responsible engagement

Kondowe: ensuring a credible election is a shared responsibility, spreading unverified claims of a rigged election threatens democracy and stability.

The Civil Society Elections Integrity Forum (CSEIF) has expressed concern over political parties continuously raising electoral issues that the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has already addressed.

The organization warns that such actions could erode public trust in the electoral process as the country prepares for the September 16, 2025 elections.

CSEIF Chairperson Benedicto Kondowe, stated that while political parties have the right to voice concerns, they must do so constructively.

“Political parties should focus on unresolved matters rather than recycling previously addressed issues. Repeatedly questioning MEC’s credibility without new evidence only fuels public distrust,” he said.

The organization also highlighted the low voter registration turnout, currently at 65% far below the projected 90%.

“While misinformation and political disruptions have played a role, other factors such as voter awareness and logistical challenges must be addressed. Restoring public confidence in the process is critical,” Kondowe added.

As the elections approach, CSEIF has urged all stakeholders, including political parties, government agencies, civil society, and development partners, to engage responsibly.

“Ensuring a credible election is a shared responsibility. Spreading unverified claims of a rigged election threatens democracy and stability,” Kondowe emphasized.

The organization calls for adherence to established legal frameworks to resolve any electoral disputes.
