ESCOM upgrades over 600,000 prepaid meters under TID

About 627, 131 prepaid meters out of the targeted 642, 680 meters have been upgraded in the Token Identifier (TID) project as of February 28 2025.

This represents a 98 percent success rate.

According to ESCOMS’s acting chief public relations officer Peter Kanjere, a total of 15, 549 are yet to be upgraded out of which 9,585 are non-compliant and awaiting replacement while 5,964 are connected to faulty transformers and will be upgraded once new transformers are installed.

Kanjere further says the project covered all districts and the remaining few customers whose meters are not compliant are spread across the country.

He further discloses that ESCOM is implementing measures to ensure uninterrupted power supply for customers whose prepaid meters are non-compliant and await upgrading.

These include converting some meter series starting with digits 371250 to post-paid meters when their pre-purchased units run out. Meter with series starting with digits 3711 and 371203 will be replaced after running out of units.

ESCOM Limited rolled out the TID project in June last year to reconfigure all customer meters in compliance with new international requirements for transfer of electricity prepayment tokens.
