NAM banks on newly trained coaches in talent identification

The new coaches

The Netball Association of Malawi (NAM) is optimistic that its newly trained 23 netball coaches in the central region will play a crucial role in nurturing young talent.

The coaches have completed a one-week Level 3 training program at the Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe, which took place from February 24 to March 2.

NAM’s General Secretary, Yamikani Kauma Khungwa, has urged the coaches to dedicate themselves to developing young players aged 5-17 across the region.

“Since it’s the first level of netball coaching in the country, we anticipate the coaches to work hard in developing the sport from the grassroots, ranging from the ages of 5-17 to develop skills to the upcoming stars among other things,” Kauma said.

Furthermore, Khungwa announced plans to roll out a Level 2 netball coaching course nationwide.

The course will take place in the Central Region from March 10-19, the Northern Region at Katoto Secondary School from March 7-16.

While the Blantyre Youth Centre will host the trainings in the Southern region from March 24 to April 2.

According to the NAM officials, the eligible coaches for the course are required to pay MK40,000 five days prior to the start of the training, they must be holders of level 3, Africa-level, or Malawi Gold, Silver, or Bronze certificates, actively coaching a team.

In an earlier interview with Capital FM, a netball analyst Neffie Kammata stressed the need for talent identification through various initiatives.

“We need to have younger talent who can easily squeeze into the senior teams, which means we can have a well-coordinated flow of talent” Kammata said.

Training coaches across the country will play a pivotal role in achieving this, analysts say.
