The Malawi senior national women’s team is looking to improve coordination across the pitch to secure crucial wins in future competitions.
This comes after a first-round 2-0 loss to Zambia’s Copper Queens in a FIFA-sanctioned friendly match on Saturday.
Despite showing good control over the game the Scorchers struggled with finishing, a key area which pundits identified as a crucial point in dire need for improvement.
The Scorchers’ coach, Lovemore Fazili is expressing optimism ahead of their final encounter with Zambia
Fazili said: “We have learned a lot of lessons. First of all, taking into consideration our set plays. Zambia scored three kicks of which we have to go and do a lot on defending that area therefore we are going to do some training mainly on those areas which I’ve just mentioned.”
According to the Malawian tactician, Scorchers had plenty of goal-scoring opportunities but could not find the right footing to capitalize on them.
“We had plenty of chances and maybe we would have won this game. When we go to training, we’re going fix the lacking areas so we can have successful games in future,”
Soccer analyst Twaha Chimuka observed that the team displayed a good performance which lacked good coordination.
“We had a very good performance in terms of control of the game but then when you are playing this kind of game there is always need for technical understanding between the players for them to accurately deliver in critical areas such as in attack,” Chimuka said.
The analyst hopes that the coaching staff will rectify the lapses in attack, midfield and defense specifically set pieces and goal keeping.
Chimuka elaborated saying: “They had a disadvantage with the height and of course the goalkeeping department where we struggled, especially in set pieces.
This is just a friendly match and I believe we did well. However, we need clinical coordination where the players in all areas are on the same page for the team to get the needed results.”
The team is using these friendlies as a preparatory ground for the second round of the WAFCON qualifiers.
