FAM assures Scorchers’ trip to Zambia, amid financial concerns

Haiya (C): We are working with government on the Scorchers' financing

Football Association of Malawi has assured the public that the women’s national football team, the Scorchers, will travel to Zambia later this month for a friendly match against Copper Queens, despite financial concerns raised by the government.

The friendly, scheduled as part of the Scorchers’ preparations for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifiers in October, was thrown into doubt after reports emerged that financial constraints could hinder the trip.

However, Haiya has dismissed fears, stating that FAM is working closely with the government to resolve logistical issues.

“I want to assure Malawians that the team will fulfill the game scheduled in this FIFA window,” Haiya said.

“We are in discussions with Capital Hill, and plans are in place to ensure that the squad travels to Lusaka by air as scheduled.”

To cover the K250 million budget for the trip, Haiya has called on corporate sponsors to support the team, emphasizing the importance of the match in boosting the Scorchers’ competitiveness ahead of the WAFCON qualifiers.

“This is a crucial game for our team, and we urge the corporate sector to come forward and partner with us. Investing in women’s football is investing in the future of Malawian sports,” he added.

Haiya also confirmed that the squad will feature key professional players, including the renowned Chawinga sisters, Tabitha and Temwa.

“We want to ensure the best possible preparations for WAFCON qualifiers,” he said.

FAM remains optimistic that the Scorchers will have a successful trip to Zambia and gain valuable match experience ahead of their continental campaign.
