Government to enforce teacher registration law starting April 1

The government has extended the teacher registration exercise deadline to April 1, 2025.
This decision follows voluntary decisions by unregistered individuals to opt out of teaching.
Director of Quality Assurance Services in the Ministry of Education, Golden Msilimba, announced during a press briefing in Lilongwe on Monday, alongside the Teachers’ Council of Malawi (TCM) and the Directorate of Teacher Education and Development.
Since the establishment of its secretariat in December 2023, TCM has received 6,053 student-teacher applications for indexing, 93,372 teacher registrations, and 42,844 licensing applications.
“By March 31, we will have the final document with all registered teachers and education administrators. From April 1, the law will take full effect, and no unregistered teacher will be allowed to practice,” Msilimba stated.
The delay in issuing certificates and licenses is attributed to manual application processes, as data entry clerks are tasked with entering information into the system. Registration is a one-time process, but licenses will require renewal every three years, with teachers paying K15,000 annually, amounting to K45,000 over three years.
TCM Registrar Grace Mphandamkoko expressed optimism that the few remaining unregistered teachers would complete the process by March 31 and encouraged them to use online registration to expedite the process.
Meanwhile, Director of Teacher Education and Development Zizwa Msukuma emphasized the importance of Continuous Professional Development (CPD) for teachers, which will be monitored by TCM as a requirement for license renewal.
