MEC releases preliminary registered voter figures

Confirmed the preliminary figures, Mwafulirwa
The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) announced that 24,078 people registered during the supplementary voter registration exercise.
MEC spokesperson Sangwani Mwafulirwa, stated that this brings the total number of registered voters for the September 16, 2025, elections—covering all three phases and the supplementary exercise—to 7,200,905.
According to Mwafulirwa, 3,087,563 of these voters are male, while 4,113,342 are female, representing 42.9 percent and 57.1 percent respectively.
“The Commission wishes to emphasize that these figures are preliminary and will be subjected to cleaning, which may lead to slight changes,” Mwafulirwa added.
The Commission also noted that the National Statistical Office (NSO) had projected a total of 10,958,490 registered voters, comprising 5,148,679 males and 5,809,811 females.
For context, the 2019 Tripartite Elections and the 2020 Fresh Presidential Election recorded 6,859,570 registered voters.
MEC conducted the supplementary voter registration exercise in response to an October 2024 court ruling that directed the National Registration Bureau (NRB) to assist all eligible Malawians in registering as citizens to participate in the voter registration exercise.
