National Bank of Malawi (NBM) Plc has donated K7.5 million to support the Maseko Ngoni tree planting initiative at Muonekera Mountain in Ntcheu.
At Blantyre’s symbolic cheque presentation ceremony, NBM’s Chief Risk Officer, Charles Ulaya, emphasized the bank’s long-term dedication to preserving the environment.
“We took up the journey of environmental conservation in 2014 because we believe that nurturing our natural resources is key to securing a sustainable future,” Ulaya explained.
“Our aim is not only to revitalize Malawi’s landscape but also to actively reduce our carbon footprint, contributing to a healthier planet.”
The initiative is being implemented by the Chibwana Youth Group, under the patronage of Inkosi Goma V, who also expressed his gratitude for the bank’s support.
“This generous donation from NBM is a milestone for our community,” Inkosi Goma V remarked.
“Every tree planted is a significant step towards preventing climate change shocks and safeguarding our environment for future generations.”
Muonekera Mountain already boasts over 65,000 surviving trees, a testament to the ongoing success of the reforestation project.
The additional funding is expected to accelerate tree planting efforts, enhance biodiversity, and improve regional air quality.
