MERA suspends four fuel stations for regulatory violations

suspended - Mount MERU Dunduzu 2
Malawi Energy Regulator Authority (MERA) has suspended operations at four service stations—ENGEN Chiringa, Mount Meru Dunduzu 2, Mount Meru Nathenje, and SIMSO Mzuzu—due to violations of fuel distribution regulations.
The stations were found selling fuel in jerry cans and drums, a practice prohibited under the Liquid Fuels and Gas Act.
Despite repeated warnings, they continued this malpractice, prompting MERA to enforce a shutdown.
The service stations will remain suspended until MERA conducts further investigations and ensures that corrective measures are implemented to prevent recurrence of such violations,” reads the statement.
The affected fuel stations are owned by major players—Vivo Energy Malawi (ENGEN), Mount Meru, and SIMSO Oil—who have now been ordered to halt supply to the suspended stations until corrective measures are put in place.
MERA has since encouraged the public to report fuel station malpractices to authorities, emphasizing its commitment to upholding safety and regulatory standards.
